<description descriptionType="Abstract">Nickel-based single crystal superalloys are the preferred materials for the hottest stage of aerospace engine turbine blades due to their exceptional high-temperature creep resistance, which arises from the absence of grain boundaries. However, their complex composition makes them susceptible to segregation-induced defects during the casting process. These defects significantly compromise mechanical performance and lead to considerable economic losses, as they cannot be mitigated by downstream processes, resulting in unacceptable rejection rates during manufacturing. Despite their detrimental impact on performance and productivity, the precise causes behind the formation of these defects and how to mitigate them remain largely unexplained.
